Folk Surrealism
In 2004 when her mother drove her car off the side of the Santa Susanna Mountains, Lynn Coleman reevaluated her life and art. From this new perspective she evolved this series of folk surrealism that melds concepts derived from Freudian psychology with folk traditions. Found materials are combined with traditional oil painting to create a nether world of complex symbolism depicting a sense of being guided by the spirit of her mother and being haunted by a bitter divorce. The result is intimate Dali-like tableaus juxtaposed with graffiti and recycled materials.
